Bis (dinitrogen) bis [ethylenebis (diphenylphosphine)] molybdenum, Mo (N2) 2 (dppe) 2 (1), reacts with CH3I, n-C4H9I, C6HnI, and n-C8H17I, respectively, to form the corresponding 2-alkyldiazenido-/V derivative, MoI (N2R)(dppe) 2, with loss of 1 equiv of dinitrogen. In benzene solution, these reactions occur slowly in the dark but much faster in light. The carbon-bound nitrogen atom is protonated by strong acid to form 2-alkylhydrazido (2-)-7V complexes of the type [MoI (N2HR)(dppe) 2J+. MoI (N2C6Hu)(dppe) 2 is converted intoMo (OH)(N2C6Hu)(dppe) 2 when it is eluted on an alumina column with tetra-hydrofuran. The v (NN) stretching frequency has moved 75 cm" 1 tolower energy. The preparation and characterization of all new compounds are presented together with a discussion of their spectral properties.
