China has historically been a highly endemic area for chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) represents a frequent route of HBV transmission, which can either occur vertically or horizontally. Vertical transmission during labour is the main route of HBV MTCT, which is mostly caused by exposure of newborn to HBV-containing maternal body fluids when passing through the birth canal. Horizontal transmission of MTCT is less common, which occurs through contact with blood or other bodily fluids of HBV-carrier mothers after birth. As the most cost-effective measures to prevent HBV transmission, injections of HBV vaccine and hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIg) have been implemented for over two decades in China, which have led to a great reduction in HBsAg prevalence in the children. 1 In the present study, we aimed to investigate the changes in the HBV transmission route in Chinese children.
