The chlorination of aspartic acid, tyrosine, and tryptophan was studied at acidic and neutral pH by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Tandem mass spectrometric analysis of chlorinated tyrosine provided additional structural information necessary for the identification of the chlorination intermediates. The amino acids were found to form dichloroacetonitrile and chloral as major byproducts. The formation of chloral was found to significantly increase as the pH was raised from 7 to 8, and the pH dependence is consistent with the reaction pathways proposed. Chlorinated water samples from a natural lake and from a wastewater treatment plant were found to contain significant amounts of both chloral and dichloroacetonitrile.
