The carcinogenic risks of metal compounds to humans have been evaluated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) (Table 1). Arsenic, chromium(VI), and nickel(II) compounds are confirmed human carcinogens. Beryllium, cadmium, and cisplatin are probably carcinogenic to humans. Cobalt, lead, and certain iron complexes have shown carcinogenic effects in animal studies and are probably carcinogenic to animals. However, the mechanism of metal carcinogenesis has not been well understood, although recent evidence suggests that carcinogenic metals induce genotoxicity in a multiplicity of ways (SNow 1992).
