This paper presents a new nonlinear model reduction formulation for obtaining reduced models of large power systems. The new formulation is based on identifying the slow-coherent areas and the external network. For each slow-coherent area, the network and the dynamics of the reduced model are aggregated separately. The network aggregation of a coherent area is performed based on only its parameters and is independent of the other coherent areas. The dynamic model aggregation is formulated as the approximation of a nonlinear input-output model. The formulation would allow the development of new approaches to obtain aggregate generator and control device models.
