Abstract The tris [(1-isopropylbenzimidazol-2-yl) dimethylsilyl] methyl ligand,[Tism Pr i Benz], has been used to afford a carbatrane complex of an element of the sixth period, namely [Tism Pr i Benz] Tl, via the reaction of [Tism Pr i Benz] Li with TlOAc.[Tism Pr i Benz] Tl may be employed as a reagent for the synthesis of other [Tism Pr i Benz] MX complexes, including the cadmium methyl compound,[Tism Pr i Benz] CdMe. The molecular structure of [Tism Pr i Benz] CdMe has been determined by X-ray diffraction, which indicates that it possesses an atrane motif, in contrast to the κ 3-coordination observed for the zinc congener,[κ 3-Tism Pr i Benz] ZnMe. Furthermore, the structure of [Tism Pr i Benz] CdMe is also different to other [Tism Pr i Benz] CdX compounds because the Cd–C atrane bond of [Tism Pr i Benz] CdMe is distinctly shorter than in other derivatives, while the Cd–N bond lengths are considerably longer.
