Could a master be his servants’ debtor? This seemingly paradoxical question points to a set of problems linked with the organization of large households, with the service relationship and with the social and economic organization of a complex, unequal society structured by mutual dependencies. Analysing financial transfers within seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Saxon and Brandenburg noble households, this essay reveals striking levels of bottom-up financial support from servants of all ranks: micro-credits essential to the functioning of the noble household. It details several types of these micro-credits, excavates their underlying social and economic logic and attends to the (varying) ways that masters and servants perceived and described them.
