It is estimated that 35–40% of people hospitalized for psychiatric disabilities are discharged to live with spouses. This article reviews the literature on spouse burden and examines the responses of 18 spouses (aged 20–81 yrs) to a larger national survey of resilience in close relatives of people with mental illness. Personal resilience, particularly personal contributions of spouses, was more evident than family or consumer resilience. 83% percent of spouses attested to a process of adaptation and recovery, with personal qualities most often cited as factors in positive changes. More rigorous research is recommended. Suggestions for clinical and nonclinical interventions are discussed.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
