CONCLUSIONAlthough it is certainly true that some individuals will lie out of financial need rather than malice, this is a larger problem beyond the scope of the research enterprise to resolve. Making the consequences of deception clear from the start avoids burden and waste all around, and also serves to clarify that deceivers are failing to uphold their end of the mutual obligations of research participation. As a rule, when the terms of payment are clear, it is reasonable to withhold payment from deliberately deceptive individuals seeking to enroll or participating in research. Cheating should not pay. &
