Systematic chemical examination of the fresh fruit of Blighia sapida yielded from its pericarp, a complex 1,4-naphthaquinone, provisionally named, blighinone and stigmasterol-fructoside. Oleanolic acid, in addition to hederagenin, is a genin constituent of the husk saponin. Glucose, rhamnose, arabinose and xylose were identified in the sugar moiety of the husk saponin. The genin of the seed kernel saponin differ from those of the husk saponin. Stigmasterol is present in the fruit, both in the free state and as fructoside, the latter being found in the pericarp.
