Haemophilus influenzaecan cause intra-amniotic infection and early pregnancy loss. The mode of transmission and risk factors forH. influenzaeuterine cavity infections are unknown. Here, we present the case of chorioamnionitis caused by ampicillin-resistantH. influenzaein a 32-year-old Japanese woman at 16 weeks of gestation. Despite empirical treatment, including ampicillin, as recommended by the current guidelines, she had fetal loss. The antimicrobial regimen was changed to ceftriaxone, and the treatment was completed without complications. Although the prevalence and risk factors for chorioamnionitis caused by ampicillin-resistantH. influenzaeare unknown, clinicians need to recognizeH. influenzaeas a potentially drug-resistant and lethal bacterium for pregnant women.
