In this article the author describes the intersections between tunnel engineering and sustainable development. The first three sections of the article introduce the overall, political, and import of sustainable development before describing its impact on tunneling. To accommodate for these growing demands, the International Tunneling Association (ITA) has adapted its mission statement to accommodate for a paradigm shift that could, potentially, benefit the field. Of the advantages to tunneling in comparison to alternatives, the author lists the fields of transportation, water systems, underground storage, and waste disposal as potential fields of market increase as social attention is increasingly given to environmental concerns. The author also gives a number of case studies to elaborate the commissioning of tunnels with sustainable solutions. They include the Groene Hart Tunnel in the Netherlands, the Central Artery in Boston, Massachusetts, the I-90 Freeway in Seattle, Washington, and the over 100 wine cellars and tunnels in the United States run by small wineries. In conclusion the author gives a list of sustainable reasons for tunnel infrastructure including the reduction of noise pollution, the conservation or historical and culturally significant areas, the prevention of visual/aesthetic pollution, and a number of others.
