ENLARGEMIENT OF salivary glands induced by chronicall1 administering isoproterenol (IPR) was first described bv Selve et al 1 in 1961 in the rat and subsequentlv confirmed in rats and mice.2An increase in size of acinar cells and variations in the number of mitoses were reported. Brown-Grant,2 Schnever 3 and W\ells 4 attributed the enlargement of salivarv glands principallv to hypertrophv. Subsequentl, Barka' demonstrated that cell proliferation was a major factor in the increase in size of rat salivarv gland. More recentl, a sharp increase in mitotic rate was observed by Schnever et al ' in rat parotid 2-3 days after IPR was administered twice dailv. Since mitotic activityN dropped to zero after the fourth day, it was suggested that hvperplasia may not play a significant role in gland enlargement after prolonged IPR treatment. Changes in ploidv after repeated injections of IPR, first report bv Schnever et al,9 have been confirmed in rat submaxillarv gland by Radlev.'0 The experiments presented here wvere carried out to determine the relative role of each of the processes, hvpertrophv and hyperplasia, in causing salivary glands in mice to enlarge after IPR was administered chronically. According to Kirby et al," both optical isomers of IPR are
