Primary and secondary muscle spindle afferents are usually separated on the basis of conduction velocity (CV). The reliability of this in hindlimb studies is supported by the correlations between CV and dynamic sensitivity (Matthews, 1972) as well as by their central terminations (Mendell & Henneman, 1971; Kirkwood & Sears, 1974; Stauffer, Watt, Taylor, Reinking & Stuart, 1976; Brown & Fyffe, 1978). However, the use of CV in the classification of jaw muscle afferents has proved unsatisfactory since conduction distances are short and difficult to measure. Also, afferent fibre diameters have not been found to be bimodally distributed (Morimoto, Inoue & Kawamura, 1982). This suggests that other ways of distinguishing between primary and secondary spindle afferents in these muscles must be used. In the present study we correlate passive responses of jaw-elevator muscle spindle afferents with the morphology of their central projections.
