Cystine in the presence of catalytic amounts of pyridoxal and copper ions at pH 8.5 and 38[degree] produces ammonia, pyruvate, CO2, free sulfur, thiosulfate, cysteine-sulfinic acid, alaninethiosulfonate. Transulfuration occurs when a sulfinate is present in the reaction. Alanine-hydrogen-disulfide (thiocysteine) is the intermediate which produces some of the above compounds.
