The authors report the results from 3 studies on the parenting of young children by mothers who live in maritally violent homes. Specifically, they examine parenting behavior, reported parenting behavior, behavioral intentions, and childrearing beliefs to gain a better understanding of how marital violence may affect parenting. The 1st study, with 37 women residing at a women's shelter and 37 comparison mothers from nonviolent homes, was intended to broaden the empirical basis of knowledge of the parenting of battered women. The 2nd study, with 30 battered women living at a shelter and 28 comparison mothers, expanded the results of the 1st study. The 3rd study, with 50 mothers residing at a battered women's shelter, addressed the question of the stability and change in battered women's parenting behavior and beliefs. All Ss had children aged 2–9 yrs.
