I t is generally accepted in psychiatry that neuroticism and psychoticism are clearly separate and unrelated. This is supported by objective evidence. In this connection the findings of Eysenck (1947) are noteworthy. Using data obtained from psychological tests he has shown that the “neuroticism continuum” linking normals to neurotics, and the “psychoticism continuum” linking normals to psychotics, are not identical and are independent of each other. Assuming that there is a constitutional differentiation between neuroticism and psychoticism, on the basis of a genetical hypothesis one would not expect to find an increased incidence of neurotic traits amongst the offspring of psychotics. On the other hand, environmental effects attendant upon psychosis in a parent might well provide a disturbing atmosphere for the upbringing of children. In the light of much evidence provided by the study of psychiatric disorders in children, an increase of neurotic traits amongst the children as a response to the stress imposed by such an environment would not be an unexpected finding. The aim of the present investigation is to examine whether or not there is an increased incidence of neurotic traits amongst the offspring of psychotic patients, and if so, to find any indicators that might point to factors in its causation.
