The exchange of the carboxylic acid groups in a brown coal and a synthetic resin with ferrous sulphate has been studied. It was found that iron as ferrous carboxylate is rapidly oxidized to ferric, particularly on air drying. The problem of the valency forms of iron naturally occurring in brown coals is discussed.
