By means of X-ray diffraction, a single crystal of BaMgFe6O11Y-type hexagonal ferrite has been studied at room-temperature. The amount of Mg2+cation/f.u. is 0.70(1) instead of 1 leading to the presence of Fe2+. These Mg2+cations are located in all the sites of the structure except in the (6cIV) octahedral site of the T-block, with a marked preference (∼58%) for the (18hVI) octahedral site at the T-S blocks boundary.
