Data are presented on the number of bacteria in mature maggots, prepupae, pupae and emerging adults breeding in laboratory medium (CSMA) and under natural conditions in horse manure, privy contents, and in garbage. Mature maggots typically have 107 bacteria internally. The count falls to 105 or 106 in the prepupa. At the start of pupation, counts are generally from 104 to 105, and this range is maintained during metamorphosis. The majority of emerging flies retain 102 or 103 bacteria, while some are sterile and others have 106. Thus, 2 declines consistently appear in the bacterial survival pattern: in the prepupa and in the newly emerged adult. The pattern of infection with a multiple saprophytic flora is essentially the same as infection with a single species of bacteria or dual infection. Whatever the medium, adults emerged harboring approximately the same number of bacteria.
