It is a truism, as stated in the Preface to this text, that the processes involved in the deposition of sediment grains are of considerable interest to a broad spectrum of scientists from sedimentologists to engineers. As such, there would seem to be a ready market for this type of text which seeks to provide a review of existing ideas concerning processes and deposits in a wide range of sedimentary environments, despite the competition that may be in place from existing texts. This book is also intended to suit a range of readers from customers, sorry students, of ‘advanced undergraduate courses to research workers and “professional” scientists’ seeking to broaden their knowledge. One central objective of the book is to provide a summary of the fundamental principles concerning sediment transport and deposition. With these laudable aims and objectives in mind, we should perhaps ask three questions of this collection of reviews:(1) is most of the material a new treatment/angle on the subject matter or can some of the subject matter be found elsewhere in existing texts?(2) do the chapters present an up-to-date and comprehensive review of the subjects they deal with? and (3) does the text fill a gap left by the scope of other competing books?
