PROTEIN kinases, by definition, work by phosphorylating specific substrates. Identifying the element that is recognized by any protein kinase is a crucial issue, as it provides a key to defining its biological targets. On page 536 of this issue!, Songyang and co-workers summarize a technique for rapidly assessing the substrate specificities of protein kinases, and apply this procedure to an analysis of protein-tyrosine kinases. The results are intriguing.
