Transcriptomic studies in last two decades showed that more than 70% eukaryotic genomes are transcribed. Those transcripts over 200 nucleotides in length without a coding ability, called long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), account for the largest portion of transcribed genomes (Deng et al., 2018). In animals, lncRNAs have been extensively recognized as critical modulators of gene expressions for a long time. However, except IPS1, which was demonstrated as a miRNA target mimicry to inhibit miRNA activity (Franco-Zorrilla et al., 2007), limited signs of progress were made in plants regarding the manners of lncRNAs until the last decade.Thanks to the powerful genetic screening approaches, a couple of lncRNAs have been recently recognized as crucial contributors to agrarian traits in crops.
