This paper examines the development of a system for cash-mediaded distribution of narwhal maktaq on Baffin Island and evaluates the resultant effects on the hunt at Arctic Bay. Prices paid to hunters for both maktaq and tusk ivory approximately doubled between 1975 and 1990. The recent surge in maktaq prices appears to have been caused by export demand in Iqaluit, where few narwhals are taken and the beluga hunt does not satisfy local demand for maktaq, and the willingness of Arctic Bay residents, including hunters and their families, to buy maktaq rather than relying completely on traditional caching and sharing arrangements.
