This study attempted to find correlations between physical properties and chromatograms, define characteristics of asphalt cements based on chromatograms, and determine whether GPC analysis could reflect the effects of aging. The details of the experimental procedure are described, and the research results are presented and discussed. It was found that physical properties of asphalt cement were significatnly changed by artificial aging, and increasing viscosity and hardness resulted from continued artificial aging. Models were used that estasblished relationships betwen viscosity and penetration and the molecular-size distrubution of asphalt cements. The models demonstrated the general applicability of using GPC analysis to characterize asphalt cements, predict physical properties, and identify the aging of asphalt cements.
