Cardiac output was measured with an Evans blue dye dilution technique in 67 males ranging in age from 19 to 86 years. All were free of cardiovascular diseases as judged by medical history, physical examination, ecg., venous pressure and teleoroent-genogram. Duplicate determinations were performed in 53 of the subjects. The result was found to be reproducible within 7% of the mean of paired values. Cardiac output decreased significantly with age; 1.01 [plus or minus] .13%/year (CO., age correlation coefficient = _.69). Cardiac index also decreased; .79 [plus or minus] .13%/year (correlation coefficient = [long dash].61). Stroke volume decreased .70 [plus or minus] .15%/year (correlation coefficient =[long dash].52). Stroke index decreased .49 [plus or minus] 13%/year (correlation coefficient =[long dash].41. The appearance time, mean transit time and passage time of the dye increased with age, while the calculated "central volume" decreased slightly. In this agewise study, the decrease in cardiac output was due to a decreased stroke index, augmented somewhat by a decrease in body size and heart rat.
