For the purpose of this workshop,'primary recurrent spontaneous abortion'was defined as at least three consecutive spontaneous terminations of pregnancy before the completion of the 28th week. The term'secondary recurrent spontaneous abortion'refers to women who have had one term pregnancy, premature deliveries or stillborn children before the series of three consecutive spontaneous abortions. The pregnancies must have been verified either by a quantitative human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) determination, by ultrasound examinations and/or histology. The male partner must have been the same for all three unsuccessful pregnancies. For some of these women, causes can be determined. There are no global data as to the overall frequency, or the frequency due to any specific cause. In the Western world the frequency is~ 1% or less; it is therefore not a major public health concern, although it is a serious problem for the individual couple. At least 50% of these women have recurrent spontaneous abortions for unknown causes.
