Light traps were used to sample the emerging adult populations of A. gambiae (the principle vector of malaria in East Africa) through 3 complete cycles of rice cultivation. In the 1st crop adults were taken in large numbers following transplanting of young rice from nursery areas to main fields. When the rice height reached 100 cm, catches fell markedly. In the 2nd and 3rd crops, transplanting again stimulated the breeding of A. gambiae, and insecticidal sprays used to control the rice pest stem borer (Maliarpha separatella) resulted in considerable mosquito adult emergence later in the crop cycle. Three factors influenced the breeding of A. gambiae in rice fields: water depth, rice height and predation.
