CERTAIN EFFECTS not ordinarily considered androgenic have become increasingly apparent in the course of observations on the use of methyl testosterone (1) in cases of male hypogonadism. One of the most striking of these is its effect upon the basal metabolic rate. The calorigenic effect of androgens has been men-tioned previously in the literature but has not been emphasized. Kenyon et al. (i) found an elevation of the basal metabolic rate in 7 of 8 eunuchoids treated with testosterone propionate and considered the ek-vation, although slight, “too consistent to be disregarded.“ A rise of 6 to 14 points in the basal metabolic rate was found in their cases.
