An episome FT21 was transferred into Salmonella anatum from Salmonella typhimurium. By means of the resulting male strains as donors, Salmonella conversion prophages ϵ 15, ϵ 34, and g 341 were mapped on the host chromosome by genetic recombination and zygotic induction experiments. Prophage ϵ 34 was shown to be attached to or integrated into the host chromosome at a site close to the purE locus, whereas prophages ϵ 15 and g 341 were located near each other at sites between his and lys and between his and gua, respectively. The implications of these findings are discussed in regard to the orgin of the phage conversion genes.
