Examined the effect of olfactory loss on nutritional status in 105 younger Ss (aged 25–45 yrs) and 125 elderly Ss (aged 60+ yrs) seeking treatment for smell dysfunction. Ss responded to questions concerning their eating habits since onset of the loss. Nutrient intakes and anthropometric measures were also assessed. Food enjoyment was most affected by smell dysfunction, although severity of smell loss did not predict level of dissatisfaction with food. Smell loss affected eating habits, but degree of loss had no effect. Nutrient intakes were adequate except for calcium intake in the elderly cohort and iron intake in the young cohort.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
