The past two decades have witnessed draн matic changes in methods of study of growth plate cartilage from patients with chondroн dysplasias. New methods have circumvented technical problems that previously limited traditional laboratory methods eg, the small quantity of available tissue obtained from a biopsy of the growth plate cartilage. Mineralization of the lower growth plate and bone interferes with or at least complicates many studies. The spontaneous in vitro dedifferentiation of chondrocytes has inhibited tissue culture techniques for in vitro studies. Methods are now being specifically tailored for investigation of the growth plate. To a large extent progress in understanding the pathogenesis of the disorders has paralleled the evolution of these methods.
