Our objective is to advocate the use of springtails (Collembola) in the K-12 classroom as a model invertebrate that can be easily reared and manipulated to demonstrate key concepts in biology. The National Science Education Standards (National Research Council 1996) and Benchmarks for Science Literacy (AAAS 1993) recommend activities that investigate and analyze questions, operate over several class periods, and use multiple process skills. Springtails are ideal organisms to use as teaching tools to meet these objectives (Usher & Stoneman 1977; Christiansen 1992). There are several advantages to using springtails:
