The total synthesis of the germacranolide costunolide is described which employs the Cope rearrangement of synthetic dehydrosaussurea lactone for generation of the 10-membered carbocyclic cyclodecadiene unit. In addition the synthesis of saussurea lactone and its conversion to dihydrocostunolide is recorded. The synthesis demonstrates the potential of the Shapiro olefin forming reaction in the presence of a reactive carbonyl and the usefulness of Se in organic synthesis.
