ThespoIIAoperon encodes three genes, including the structural gene for a sporulation-induced sigma factor, δF. We used deletion analysis ofspoIIA-lacZfusions to define the location of thespoIIApromoter. We found that δH-RNA polymerase transcribesspoIIAaccurately in vitro and propose that δHdirects transcription ofspoIIAduring sporulation.
