Abstract The location and character of a series of submarine canyons off the Natal coast are discussed. It is deduced that the persistent action of turbidity currents commencing probably at the end of the Cretaceous period was the main erosive factor. Attention is drawn to the importance of these submarine canyons in influencing present day sediment transport patterns.
