This collection explores the ways in which the environment in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) has conditioned the movements of humans, goods, animals, and diseases. It seeks to view Middle Eastern history from the perspectives that are often overlooked, namely environmental ones. It also strives to expand work within global environmental history by examining accounts of how Islamic societies across the MENA have adopted and been shaped by environmental constraints in a variety of contexts and eras. Attempting to achieve these ends, the volume particularly attends to the dialectical relationships between humans and environments: environmental contexts present an initial range of possibilities within which humans find ways to live, develop cultural traditions and accordingly alter their environment, while being in turn shaped and altered by those same environmental currents, within a continuous cycle to which both humans and environments mutually contribute. The volume is organized around the three major themes that help the reader recognize the crucial standpoints of environmental history within the region: environmental forces that impacted the course of the region’s history, the258 book reviews
