Using sensitive galvanometers (the large string galvanometer of Edelmann and the "Spulengalvanometer von Siemens und Halske"), Berger has been able to record the electric currents arising in the human brain. He obtained the tracings by introducing needle electrodes extradurally through the site of trephine openings in previously operated patients, and also nearly identical tracings from normal persons by the use of lead foil electrodes applied to the shaved scalp. Two types of waves are seen in the curves: those of the "first order," of about 90o and a maximum voltage of about 0.00015-0.0002, and those of the "second order" of about 35o. Berger reviews the literature of experimental electro-encephalography, discusses and excludes the probable sources of error in his own work and indicates the possible future significance of this technical approach in neuropsychiatry.
