The thin-film naphthalene mass-transfer analogue technique has provided a rapid and economic method of comparing forced convection heat-transfer coefficients in a variety of situations. The present contribution outlines a further development of the technique to the stage that it is capable of predicting absolute heat-transfer coefficients directly and-accurately. Heat-transfer coefficients derived by analogy for flow through a tube agree with those given by the Colburn equation to within±5 per cent over a Reynolds number range 7· 6× 10 4< Re< 1· 3× 10 6. Tube entrance region heat-transfer measured by analogy is in good agreement with other investigations.
