The collections of the Science Museum are the finest of their kind in the world. This claim is both arguably true and deeply problematic. The collections’ size and wealth are indeed beyond doubt. Catalogued by over a quarter of a million inventory numbers, many of them referring to numerous (in a few cases — such as the original workshop of James Watt — thousands of) individual artefacts, they cover the history and present state of science, engineering, transport and medicine from the measuring instruments of ancient Egypt to the latest electronic instruments.
