Studied a catchment area population of bipolar patients, from 2 mental health clinics, to determine what proportion of them had a positive family history of mental illness. Data were obtained from chart reviews, patient interviews based on the Family History Research Diagnostic Criteria, and relatives' interviews. 58% of 177 bipolar patients had positive family histories. In one mental health clinic, where all but 5 patients were interviewed, the figure was 54%. When patients from both clinics were combined, along with 49 patients who were not interviewed and had negative family histories on their charts, and 10 patients not interviewed who had positive family histories on their charts, the figure was 48% with a positive family history.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
