At this point it is appropriate to take stock of the materials presented so far, and to return to the main themes broached in the Introduction. This will involve, first of all, a reconsideration of estate agriculture as a ‘model’ or ‘path’ of rural development that is especially prevalent in the underdeveloped countries, and a discussion of the insights that may be offered by the Costa Rican experience.
