The literature is reviewed. The replenishment of depleted protein or carbohydrate stores is associated with concomitant deposition of water, which will reduce the energy equivalent of 1 lb. bodyweight gained. With an adequate protein intake, which is considered important in weight reduction, the energy equivalent of 1 lb. bodyweight gained or lost is 3500 Cal., but in fasting or re-feeding after fasting it is much less. A. G. Mullins.
