A simple GC system with minimal power requirements was developed for determining the microbial-respiratory gases: H2, N2, O2, CH4, CO2, and Kr—an internal standard. Such a system would be used in a life detection device to be considered for landing on Mars. The system, consisting of a column packed with phosphoric acid-treated Porapak Q and maintained at 20°C in conjunction with a microbead thermistor detector, provided a sensitive means of determining microbial-respiratory gases.
