Brings together various empirical and theoretical observations from psychology, sociology, and cultural anthropology in order to sketch an evolving conceptualization of why, how, and when rumor and gossip are generated and transmitted. The author begins by giving a flavor of the prevalence of rumor and gossip and mentioning the occasionally perverse effects of each. The author then examines both more closely, updating a classic psychological definition of rumor and reviewing the identifying characteristics of gossip. Next, he turns to the psychology of rumor and gossip, focusing on the circumstances and functions. The chapter concludes with the author underscoring the purposive role of rumor and gossip in the social world.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
