METHODSPreparation of animals. In this study, male Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 150 to 200 gm. each were used. Two rats shared a cage and ate Purina rat pellets as a standard diet. Diets of horsemeat, oats and water were given ad lib for 3 days prior to an experiment with an average weight gain of 12 per cent. Following this, the horsemeat and water were eliminated and the rats ate only oats for 24 hours prior to pigment injection with an average weight loss of 7 per cent. Generally speaking, groups of 10 to 18 rats were injected simultaneously and the results of deatb or survival within any groups were used for comparison between groups. Some experimental situations were repeated several times and the reported results show the sum of animals in all of the comparable groups.
