It is a pleasure to contribute to the symposium in honor of Professor Alfred Hildebrandt at the occasion of his 60th birthday. In his thesis, Professor Hildebrandt was one of the first collaborators of Professor Herbert Remmer who studied the influence of the prototype inducer phenobarbital on glucuronidation of the sulfonamide sulfadimethoxin [1]. Glucuronidation studies were continued in 1973 with the observation of differential induction of UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) by prototype inducers such as phenobarbital and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)[2], suggesting the existence of multiple UGTs. Recent studies established a large supergene family of UGTs [3]. Current knowledge about the functions of selected human UGTs and their regulation by phenobarbital-or PAH-type inducers is summarized in Section II. Section III describes evidence for at least two PAH-inducible UGTs and Section IV deals with their function in PAH metabolism.
