IIIII The health benefits of regular participation in moderate to vtgorous physical activity are well established. 1· 2 Yet. 40% to 60% of the US population is sedentary, engaging in no meaningful physical activity, and less than 20% of adults regularly participate in the type of physical activity most likely to provide cardiorespiratory fitness and health benefits. 3· 4 Recent assessments indicate that even small increases in physical activity provide substantial health benefits1 and that the least active members of our population may stand to gatn the most from becoming more active. 5Increasingly, physicians are incorporating recommendations for health promotion and disease prevention into clinical practice. 6 However, the time available for such efforts is l1mited, and exercise is just one of many important topics; others include smoking, welgh. t control, safety belt use, and drink-ing and driving. The growing need to address this topic, together with time constraints, may well lead physicians to ask the following questions: Should we encourage apparently healthy patients to exercise? What guidelines for exercise should we offer patients? What actions can we easily incorporate into our practices to foster beneficial increases in physical activity?
