Organic and inorganic chemical wastes from tanneries and insecticide and other industries have been released into the Aberjona watershed in eastern Massachusetts since before the midnineteenth century. In recent studies of the environmental fate of these waste chemicals, it has been shown that sediments in many parts of the watershed contain high concentrations of toxic metals and organic pollutants. We were concerned that exposure to these or other as yet uncaracterized pollutants in sediments might pose risks to human health
