A wasp, by chance, discovers your picnic and lands on the honey pot. She feeds for a while and eventually flies off. A few minutes later, she reappears, and if she is unmolested, she will re-turn repeatedly. Should you, in exasperation, move the pot, she will hunt persistently in its former position, showing that she is not just flying toward the smell of the honey. In some way, she has re-corded the location of the pot in relation to surrounding land-marks. Although she may refine her spatial knowledge over many visits, she has to acquire enough information on her first visit to guide her subsequent return. She does this during a long and elabo-rately patterned flight that she per-forms on her departure after first finding the honey. These learning flights are intriguing for several reasons.
